GET OVER THE OFFICE POLITICS - A few tips of how to get around your employer and make time with your family. If you work from home, tell your support staff you’re working away from the office. It sounds much better than HOME. When you work through your lunch because you need to leave early for a PTA meeting and your boss wants you to stay on, tell your boss you have "prior arrangements", but try to arrange to take up the task later on. Don’t say you can’t do something, just when it will be feasible for you to do it. That’s a more positive way to handle things. If it’s not convenient for them, negotiate a time. Most importantly, you will have to become a great PR person. Practice your choice of words or have key phrases in mind when asking time changes or time off. Always give them a solution to the problem. Never ask to inconvenience your employer without being prepared and make sure you give them their time back.

Working Mums - can have a career as well. Not many people think so. If you're dedicated to your job, continually strive to better your career, work hard and your bosses know that, then why is it that the moment you stop working those long hours, leave at 5.30pm once a week or worse ask to change your hours, does the shit hit the fan? Your family are "customers" too and they are entitled to your time. The company may allow the changes and even boast that they are an understanding employer, you are suddenly overlooked for promotions, bonuses or general management positions. Surely, they agreed in the first place because they value you as a key worker. Being a Mum doesn’t mean that you’re no longer dedicated, productive or flexible to the companies needs. But the fact remains, every time you come back to work after being sick, for example, one of the 1st question asked is how's your kid doing. Why do they do that? If you can work from home, let your boss know you’re prepared to do that if the need arises and you have to take time off unexpectedly. Be proactive, give them solutions before they become problems. Show your commitment. Don’t let them think "Oh typical, She’s not here again." This damages your credibility and affects your image. Some people may say that's cheating but it’s a necessity for most working mums. Statistics show that working mums have more to offer companies, they're so concerned with getting a bad image and letting people down that they are more dedicated. Pride will not often let them fail and they need to prove to themselves and others that they can manage the two "jobs" at the same time. Also, they need the money, there are mouths to feed and other commitments to up keep.

It's important to get away from your busy schedule a couple of times a day. This way refreshing yourself mentally & physically. You achieve more.
