| Fat or Too Thin? Weight isn't only determined by how much you eat, but it's also affected by how much your parents and other relatives weigh - genetics and "big bone" body types play a part. Genetics will affect how many calories you need every day and your appetite for food. Activity also affects your weight. Suppose you are inactive and spend most of your free time watching TV. Your body doesn't need or burn as many calories as it would if you played basketball, skated, or went for a walk instead. But remember: people naturally are different shapes and sizes. Big kids & small kids both may be the right weight and height based on their genetics & body types. It's not "good" to be thin, or "bad" to be a certain weight, just like it's not good to be tall or bad to be short. It's just that being too thin or too fat is not healthy. So it's important to exercise and eat right to take care of their. Explain the height & weight scales to your kids. | advice on kids | |||||||||||||

| Have you ever heard of the green-eyed monster rearing its ugly head? Most kids argue because they are competitive. Everyone is, but some people can control it better. When they compete and someone beats them, it's easy for them to feel upset and disappointed. If their brother or sister gets a better grade in math, scores in football, or they win an award for something at at school, its natural to feel a little envious. Why couldn't it be me that those good things happened to? will be what they say. The problem now-a-days is that we don't seem to be teaching kids about being a "good sport" and staying competative. Even at their school sports days - there aren't any losers. That's not real life though is it? As a parent all you can do is try to encourage them to take part in as much as they can and how excell in the things they are really good at. Be careful not to always put one of your kids in the spotlight, try and be proud of all of them. This will stay with them right through to adulthood. Be positive about every experience they have, good or bad it's all a learning curve for them, preparing them for life in general. | ||||||||||||||
